On this very special day, please allow me to greatly appreciate
the Keynote Speakers, Plenary Speakers, Presenters, and
Participants that have contributed greatly to our seminar. I also would
like to greet all the guests, presenters, and participants that have
contributed and joined this seminar online, and we wish all of us
always good health.
This is the second international seminar organized by the Faculty
of Science and Technology, Universitas Terbuka. After months of hard
work by all committees and partners, I am very pleased that this
exciting day has finally arrived. Our 2nd International Seminar of
Science and Technology, or ISST 2022, has main theme of
“Accelerating Sustainable Innovation toward Society 5.0”, with three
sub-topics that cover various fields on science and technology:
Science and Mathematics for Innovation, Sustainable Food
Agriculture, Environmental Engineering, and Sustainable
Development

Distinguished colleagues and guests, Innovation in science and
technology have always been a cornerstone for humanity, thus
contributing to the improvement of society. However, many global
challenges are still looming and can potentially lead to catastrophic
events, such as global warming, depletion of natural resources,
economic inequality, etc. During this troubling global Covid- 19
pandemic that still significantly impacts humanity, it is very important
essentially scientific and technological advancements gain new
knowledge and create new values for a better life. To address this
challenge, collaborations between many stakeholders from industry,
research, and higher education institutions become increasingly
important. In 2016, the concept of “Society 5.0” was proposed in Japan
to establish a “Super Smart Society” (SSM). This type of society is
classified in the fifth stage of development in human society, after the
first: hunter-gatherer; second: agrarian; third: industrial; and fourth:
information societies.
