As the chairman of today’s seminar, which is organized by the
Faculty of Science and Technology, Universitas Terbuka, I would like
to welcome all guests and participants of the seminar. This is the
second international seminar organized by our faculty, with the theme
“Accelerating Sustainable Innovation toward Society 5.0”. Our
seminar is held through two methods: on-site at Universitas Terbuka
Convention Centre; and online via Zoom or Universitas Terbuka
Youtube Channel. In this opportunity, I would also like to greet all
participants online.

We are very grateful for the full support given by Universitas
Terbuka, especially by the Rector and all partners involved in this
seminar. On behalf of the committee, I would like to express my
deepest gratitude. Honorable Guests, Colleagues, and Participants,
human capability in advancing scientific and technological discovery
has always been important. As proposed in the “Society 5.0” concept
in Japan, 2019, many of the applications of such advancement are for
the benefit of humanity, which is to make a better quality of life.
Historically, there have been four milestones in human society: first is
the hunter-gatherer when humans always depend on nature to fulfill
their needs; second is the agricultural era, when humans learn how to
cultivate animals, plants, and other necessary resources; third is the
industrial period when human able to utilize machinery for
automatization for many important works; and fourth is the information
and communication technology (ICT) era when computing power able
to advances society.

Society 5.0 paradigm offers a refinement of the 4.0 concept,
emphasizing the balance between modern technology, such as ICT
and artificial intelligence (AI), in harmony with society and the natural
environment. In Society 5.0 paradigm, the leading emphasis/actor is
human, by creating novel scientific findings relevant to value and
wisdom, thus able to reduce economic inequality and create global
prosperity. Such a positive impact on the global scale is in accordance
