SPBI4106 – Critical Reading

Critical Reading provides a complete method to analyze texts by studying their linguistic structures together with their social and cultural environments. The approach examines four factual text types including descriptive, expository, persuasive, and argumentative while teaching readers about the complex relationship between language and meaning and purpose. A detailed analysis of stylistic features and linguistic elements to help understand how grammatical forms create textual meaning will be discussed. Readers can understand different structural meanings while extracting hidden information and distinguishing factual content from opinions and explicit statements from implicit ones. Examples and exercises will be given so that readers can identify main points while extracting themes from supporting evidence and making generalizations and evaluating writers' tone and purpose and potential biases in their work. Essential analytical tools to understand academic and professional, as well as everyday written content will be introduced. Through Critical Reading readers will be presented with an understanding of meaning interpretation through scientific and cultural and contextual foundations which can be used for independent study or academic teaching.
