Setelah mempelajari mata kuliah ini, mahasiswa diharapkan dapat memiliki pemahaman yang memadai terkait pemerolehan bahasa kedua dalam berbagai konteks, teori, metode dan hasil-hasil penelitian dalam bidang SLA. Selain itu, mahasiswa juga diharapkan mampu mengaplikasikan teori tersebut dalam praktik pembelajaran dan penelitian Bahasa lnggris sebagai bahasa kedua. Secara garis besar, mata kuliah SLA mengkaji tentang: (1) pengenalan dan landasan SLA; (2) teori, model, dan hipotesis dalam SLA; (3) peranan language environment dalam SLA; (4) pengaruh aspek individual dan sosial dalam SLA; (5) inter\/anguage dalam SLA; dan 6) karakteristik pembelajar SLA dan metode pembelajaran L2. Aspek-aspek tersebut diramu dalam 6 (enam) modul perkuliahan.
